The Purpose of the Thermal Valve on an air compressor is to achieve a high discharge temperature quickly in order to stop moisture from condensing in the sump tank. The Thermal Valve is normally open which closes off a port when the compressed air temperature rises. The thermal valve can be both a diverting valve which is the most common, or sometimes it is used as a mixing valve. A bad or faulty thermal valve or thermal valve element could be one reason that a compressor runs hot, so when diagnosed, if the thermal valve is at fault, it is important to change it before any damage can be done to the compressor. Over time with wear and tear these valves can become worn and defective, so it is important to maintain this area of your air compressor according to the manufacture maintenance plan
