Sizing

  1. Determine inlet temperature to aftercooler
  2. Determine desired outlet temperature. (Aftercooler outlet temperature = ambient temperature + approach)
  3. Determine needed approach. (Approach = desired outlet temperature - ambient temperature)
  4. Find flow (SCFM) under column of correct inlet and approach temperature and read left for model number.

Approach Temperatures

To use the approach temperature tables you need to decide if you want a 5, 10, 15 or 20 degree approach temperature. Second you need to know your flow rate (SCFM). Third you need to know the temperature of your compressed air as it leaves the air compressor (discharge temperature). For example:

  • Air Compressor produces 250 SCFM
  • Compressed air discharge temperature 250 F
  • And we want a 10 F approach temperature

The correct unit for these conditions is a AC-140

Approach temperature is the difference between the ambient temperature and the compressed air temperature. So, going back to our example. If the ambient temperature is 75°F and the approach temperature is 10°F than the compressed air will be approximately 85°F at the outlet of the air receiver. The compressed air enters 250°F and leaves 85°F. It is critical to have a separator and drain installed at the outlet of the aftercooler to collect all the moiture that drops out as the air is cooled.
